Maritime and transport officials, as well as representatives of the shipping industry, from Azerbaijan, Georgia and Kazakhstan today concluded a two-day seminar organised in the Azerbaijani capital Baku by the EU-funded transport programme TRACECA. The meeting discussed international regulations for mobile offshore drilling, coastal management, and state obligations regarding offshore drilling, as well as prevention and response to pollution from offshore activities.
The two-day event was organised by the EU-funded TRACECA Maritime Safety and Security II Project.
TRACECA Secretary General Mircea Ciopraga told participants that the programme’s strategy included a number of measures on maritime traffic security and environmental protection in the Black and Caspian Seas. “The countries constantly work on the implementation of the requirements accepted by the Convention within the framework of the International Maritime Organization as well as on the accession of the TRACECA member states to new Conventions and Agreements,” a TRACECA press release quoted him as saying.
The TRACECA project on maritime safety and security was initially launched by the European Commission in January 2013 for a duration of three years. It was recently extended until June 2016. The objective is to support the approximation of EU legislation and further ratification and implementation of international conventions in the domains of maritime safety and security. It also aims to improve quality and coordination of maritime administrations in the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea partner countries, which include Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Moldova, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Bulgaria, Romania and Turkey.
