China, Korea Partner on Kazakh Oil Fields
Heavy-lift crews from four Korean companies and Chinese carrier Cosco Shipping (COSCOL) will be working through 2020 to deliver oil and gas equipment to western Kazakhstan.
Modules weighing up to 1,800 tons each will be transported by COSCOL vessels from fabrication yards in Korea and Europe to ports in Finland and Bulgaria, and then transferred to other vessels sailing to Caspian Sea-area oil fields in Kazakhstan via Russian waterways, COSCOL said.
“We will be using a fleet of 18 semi-submersible vessels and deck carriers to perform about 60 shipments beginning in 2018 and completing in about 2020,” according to a COSCOL press release.
COSCOL’S Korea partners are Dongbang Transport, Hanjin Transportation, CJ Korea Express and Chung Yang Shipping. Representatives from COSCOL, its unidentified customer and the Korean companies closed the deal Sept. 27 at a meeting in Astana, Kazakhstan.
